What are challenges facing Christians today. Some would answer lack of finances, others lack of love. The greatest challenge facing believers today is a true understanding of who Christ Jesus is.
Matthew 7:21-24 speaks of those that proclaim they know him but the lack of righteousness betrays them. A person that loves the Lord Jesus will do what he instructs him to do. With CHURCH leadership emphasis on increasing the number of people that attend services, prosperity and being politically correct have been to the detriment of knowing who Christ Jesus truly is.
He is our suffering Messiah. The Holy Writ says that we are not above our Master and if He suffered we too should expect suffering. Why are running we from our pain and hurts as though there is a place on earth where there is no pain or hurt. Read the newspaper, listen to the news, they are replete with suffering and hurting people. God never meant for us to isolate ourselves from suffering and hurting people as though such isolation would bring peace on earth. Christ Jesus our Lord was lied on, ostracized, rejected and humiliated, yet he never deserted the people He came to save. The reason we do not want to suffer is because we do not understand the nature of Christ and what He has given to us to endure suffering.
Why suffer? The Bible says he who has suffered in the flesh has ceased from sin. Suffering stops us from sinning. Christ Jesus our Lord learned obedience through the things He suffered.
Hebrews 5:8 Though he were a Son, yet learned he obedience by the things which he suffered;
The Bible says that when we see Him we shall be like Him. Christ our Lord suffered, will He see righteous suffering in us that reflects who He is in us?
Christ Jesus did not come into the earth seeking riches. Why is it that some believers consume so much of their time seeking after riches.
Luke 9:58 And Jesus said unto him, Foxes have holes, and birds of the air have nests; but the Son of man hath not where to lay his head.
Have we fallen into the trap of Job’s friends who thought the riches of this world conferred God’s special blessing upon us. The Apostle Paul warned us to stay away from those who think that Godliness is gain.
1 Timothy 6:5 Perverse disputings of men of corrupt minds, and destitute of the truth, supposing that gain is godliness: from such withdraw thyself.
Christ Jesus our Lord did not desire riches of this earth because He knew His Heavenly Father would supply all His needs. To believe God will supply your needs requires faith. Many have faith in earthly riches, not in the Heavenly Father through His Son Christ Jesus. If riches were so good for us why would Christ Jesus say “How hardly shall those that have riches enter into the Kingdom of God”, and again, “You cannot serve God and mammon too”. Our Lord instructed us to seek the Kingdom of Heaven in righteousness and all the other things would be added unto us. When things are added unto us they should not possess us.
Matthew 6:33 But seek ye first the kingdom of God, and his righteousness; and all these things shall be added unto you.
How can we possibly separate ourselves based on denomination, race, nationality and consider ourselves to be like Christ. The Apostle Paul addressed this question with the first century believers who were attempting to separate themselves from other believers.
1 Corinthians 1:13 Is Christ divided? was Paul crucified for you? or were ye baptized in the name of Paul?
And also,
Galatians 3:28 There is neither Jew nor Greek, there is neither bond nor free, there is neither male nor female: for ye are all one in Christ Jesus.
Is Holiness the pursuit of every believer. Christ Jesus said be ye Holy as I am Holy. Christ would never command us to do something we could not do. What is holiness? The following verses help us to understand what holiness is.
Romans 6:22 But now being made free from sin, and become servants to God, ye have your fruit unto holiness, and the end everlasting life.
2 Corinthians 7:1 Having therefore these promises, dearly beloved, let us cleanse ourselves from all filthiness of the flesh and spirit, perfecting holiness in the fear of God.
Ephesians 4:24 And that ye put on the new man, which after God is created in righteousness and true holiness.
Holiness is the separation from sin. What is sin? The following are sins that some people that cause themselves believers practice. Why do they practice such things? It is not because of who Christ is. It is usually some other fallen person they are emulating rather trying to be like Christ.
Galatians 5:19 Now the works of the flesh are manifest, which are these; Adultery, fornication, uncleanness, lasciviousness,
20 Idolatry, witchcraft, hatred, variance, emulations, wrath, strife, seditions, heresies,
21 Envyings, murders, drunkenness, revellings, and such like: of the which I tell you before, as I have also told you in time past, that they which do such things shall not inherit the kingdom of God.
Be willing to suffer, pursue the Kingdom of God instead of riches and be Holy, then will you know who Christ Jesus our Lord is. For in all these things He was the par exemplar.
ONE BODY NOT TWO
One sunny bright day a church member and I canvassed a local neighborhood for the purpose of
sharing the gospel of Jesus Christ and extending invitations to attend our congregation. On a few occasions it was quite obvious that a few people would close the curtains to their windows and lock the doors before we reached their homes. Initially we believed the reaction by the less than
hospital host was due to their opposition to the sharing of the good news.
However through persistence we finally did get to meet one of the people that had initially ignored us. She told us we were not welcomed to her home before because she believed we were Jehovah’s Witnesses. To her the giveaway was the bibles we carried. Since so few churches on a continuous basis visited this low-income area the natural assumption was those that did come with bibles in their hands were Jehovah’s Witnesses since they came on a more frequent basis and with bible in hand.
Just as in the case above perception was reality; the same appears to be true when it comes to the body of Christ coming together. First, because of the sordid past of those that called themselves the church, such as the persecutions of those with differing beliefs, inquisitions and pogroms.
and the negative results; many believe a divided church is preferable to one whole church.
What does the bible say about one universal church? Is it evil or is it good. Let’s examine the history of the church.
Beginning of the Church.
13 ¶ When Jesus came into the coasts of Caesarea Philippi, he asked his disciples, saying,
Whom do men say that I the Son of man am? 14 And they said, Some [say that thou art] John
the Baptist: some, Elias; and others, Jeremias, or one of the prophets. 15 He saith unto them,
But whom say ye that I am? 16 And Simon Peter answered and said, Thou art the Christ, the
Son of the living God. 17 And Jesus answered and said unto him, Blessed art thou, Simon
Barjona: for flesh and blood hath not revealed [it] unto thee, but my Father which is in heaven.
18 And I say also unto thee, That thou art Peter, and upon this rock I will build my church ; and
the gates of hell shall not prevail against it. Matthew 16 (AV)
In the above scripture we see the first mention of the term church in the New Testament. The term church is used only in the New Testament. The Greek word used for church in the New Testament is ekklesia {ek-klay-see’-ah}. Ekklesia means a gathering of citizens called out from their homes into some public place, or an assembly. The word ekklesia as we shall see in its origin differs in meaning from the word church.
The Oxford English Dictionary states that the word church originated from the Greek word kriakn which means of the Lord, or house of the Lord, as the name given to the Christian place of worship. However, the term church only became popular in usage from the third century forward. From this we can derive that the classical meaning of the Greek term church actually does mean the building and not the body of believers.. There are those that think because to the spelling (and I emphasize spelling) of the word that it has something to do with doctrines of the body of believers in Christ Jesus. Many say that since you do not see the word church in the Old
Testament it means that it did not exist before the coming of Jesus Christ in the flesh.
We must understand the original meaning to clear the confusion as to the true church. Before the third century the body of believers was called an assembly or congregation by the Jewish believers. We must remember that Jesus, the disciples and most of the writers of the New Testament were Jewish.
Therefore they would have used terms that a Jewish person would
understand. They were not trying to establish a political system or club as the world perceives such things, but they were trying to establish the kingdom of God.
To the Romans, of whom the first century Christians was under their ruler, in the first century to hear the word ekklesia it would have meant a political assembly of the people of a city. This is why Jesus was called an insurrectionist.
It was believed that the assembly was a threat to the political system as it was. This was not a newly coined word. The closest the Greek writers could come to representing this assembling was to relate it to the political
assembly of the people of a city. This political assembly was contrasted with the smaller group of elected officials who comprised the council ( boule ) .
Pliny….. in a letter to Trajan written a
few weeks after an affair with Christians. Pliny refers to the vote of the local boule and ecclesia. 1 This gives understanding to the following verse and the perceived threat of Jesus to the Roman Empire. He was considered by some to be a political leader trying to overthrow the
king.
Joh 19:12 And from thenceforth Pilate sought to release him: but the Jews cried out, saying, If
thou let this man go, thou art not Caesar’s friend: whosoever maketh himself a king speaketh
against Caesar .
However, the Jews had a different word for assembling before God than the Greek word ekklesia . To the Jews the time for gathering before God in the Hebrew is `atsarah {ats-aw-raw’}. We see this word used in the following verse.
Joe 1:14 ¶ Sanctify ye a fast, call a solemn assembl y, gather the elders [and] all the inhabitants
of the land [into] the house of the LORD your God, and cry unto the LORD
and also,
Joe 2:15 Blow the trumpet in Zion, sanctify a fast, call a solemn assembly : 16 Gather the
people, sanctify the congregation, assemble the elders, gather the children, and those that suck
the breasts: let the bridegroom go forth of his chamber, and the bride out of her closet.
17 Let the priests, the ministers of the LORD, weep between the porch and the altar, and let
them say, Spare thy people, O LORD, and give not thine heritage to reproach, that the heathen
should rule over them: wherefore should they say among the people, Where is their God?
Notice the key words in the above verses. Gather the people, sanctify the congregation, assemble the elders, gather the children into the house of the LORD your God. If this is not what we call a church service what is.
However there are those who still want to believe that the church was not in the Old Testament. They want to believe it all started in the New Testament in Matthew 16. Contrary to what many believe the church was in the Old Testament as shown by the following verse.
Ac 7:38 This is he, that was in the church in the wilderness with the angel which spake to him
in the mount Sina, and with our fathers: who received the lively oracles to gi8ve unto us
Acts 7:38 is referring to the revelations and commandments God gave to Moses and the children
of Israel from Mount Sinai as they were wondering in the desert. This group that gathers before
God the writer of Acts refers to the church in the wilderness. The nomenclature for this
gathering is taken from the following passage of scripture.
Ex 19:3 And Moses went up unto God, and the LORD called unto him out of the mountain,
saying, Thus shalt thou say to the house of Jacob, and tell the children of Israel;
4 Ye have seen what I did unto the Egyptians, and how I bare you on eagles’ wings, and brought
you unto myself. 5 Now therefore, if ye will obey my voice indeed, and keep my covenant, then
ye shall be a peculiar treasure unto me above all people: for all the earth is mine: … 17 And
Moses brought forth the people out of the camp to meet with God; and they stood at the nether
part of the mount. 18 And mount Sinai was altogether on a smoke, because the LORD
descended upon it in fire: and the smoke thereof ascended as the smoke of a furnace, and the
whole mount quaked greatly.
Not only was the church, the term used to refer to the body of believers, in the Old Testament but they also had the gospel preached to them too.
Ga 3:8 And the scripture, foreseeing that God would justify the heathen through faith, preached before the gospel unto Abraham, saying, In thee shall all nations be blessed
Heb 4:2 For unto us was the gospel preached, as well as unto them: but the word preached did not profit them, not being mixed with faith in them that heard it.
.
Israel was the church in the wilderness and also had the gospel preached to them. Why then do some that call themselves Christians castigate them and reject their holy days and feasts. Why do they reject their customs as though they may be pagan? Without a doubt every person has to knowledge Jesus as Lord and Savior to gain eternal life with the Heavenly Father.
Does Israel’s denial of Jesus as the Messiah make void the law which God gave to Moses. One Christmas morning I attempted to assemble a bicycle for my daughter. I thought that
putting a simple bicycle together would be an easy task. Besides, how many of us as young boys did not at one time or another have to replace or repair a tire on a bike. Well assembling a bike I thought was pretty much the same. I totally ignored the instructions. Even with my wife
pleading with me to get some help I ignored her as well.
Well I guess you know the end of the story. My daughter had a bike that leaned to one side. The handles never would tighten and the screw for the pedal was stripped. Because I refused to read the instruction, did not make the instructions or the bicycle bad. Well this is the way we
have treated the customs and the laws given to the nation of Israel.
Because Israel was flawed in the way they reacted to Jesus the Messiah, we have rejected the good instructions that God has given us. There is nothing wrong with the culture or the laws. Just like with the Gentiles who
had and have a sin nature, the people of Israel had to contend with the sin nature as well.
However, we will never grasp the depth of our sin nature and what we can do to overcome the division in the body of Christ until we are able to come to grips with the teachings of God given in its Jewish background.
For many believers the rejection of Israel also means the rejection of the law. How many times have we the heard the phrase “we are under grace not law”. The inference being we no longer need to bother with the laws and commandments of the Old Testament because they were all done away on the cross when Jesus died and resurrected on the third day. This phrase I believe has given more believers a license to sin than anything else.
A well know pastor published a book on grace. In it he stated a problem that had taken place in one of his denominations’ churches. A pastor had left his wife and took up with the secretary. The people in the church wanted this popular pastor to speak to the unrepentant pastor about his
lifestyle. The book goes on to say while on the plane out to visit the unrepentant pastor this thought came to him. What can I possibly say to the brother? He is as knowledgeable on the subject as I am. Besides he has not lost his salvation, he is only out fellowship with God.
Can you believe this? Forget about the hurt the wife must feel, knowing that her husband is sleeping with someone else. Forget about the shame the children of such a relationship, to know that their father who is supposed to be a paradigm of righteousness has fallen to the low
level of disgrace. Forget about the church community which tries to present a message of reconciliation to God to a world desperately in need of it, and what they have to show for it is a man that does not want to be reconciled to his wife. These things matter, but not to the degree
that you two pastors that do not have the foggiest idea as to what sin is.
These are the ones that have been entrusted with the care of souls and they do not know that this type of sin is egregious to God. And what do they have to justify their line of reasoning. Grace apart from the law.
To understand division within the body of Christ we must understand what the law is. The word law is translated from the Greek word metronome. It is the Hebrew word Torah which is also translated law.
Notice how the Apostle Paul addressed this same question of a flawed people handling perfect instructions. It is my contention that not only has this poor translation of the assembling of the people of God caused confusion, it has also separated us. There are many that believe that the nation of Israel has nothing to do with the church. This is what I believe is the major cause of division in the church which will be discussed in a later chapter.
There are many today who are opposed to Jews today because they misunderstand the scriptures. But if they realized that the Bible never taught the separation of the Jewish faith from the Christian faith, there would be much more healing in the body of Christ.
Romans 3:1 ¶ What advantage then hath the Jew? or what profit is there of circumcision?
2 Much every way: chiefly, because that unto them were committed the oracles of God
God committed unto the Jews his oracles. The word oracles means the words or utterances of God in the New Testament. These oracles are the Old Testament scriptures on which the New Testament uses as a foundation for its fulfillment and doctrines. Without the Old Testament
scriptures there would be no New Testament. Jesus the Son of God demonstrated the importance of the Old Testament scripture in the following.
Mt 5:17¶ Think not that I am come to destroy the law, or the prophets: I am not come to destroy, but to fulfil.
The law and prophets are euphemisms for the Old Testament scriptures. One thing we must know is that the oracles were not meant just to be memorized but to be acted upon. As the Psalmist wrote, thy word have I hid in my heart that I might not sin against you.
In other words the Jewish culture, lifestyle and writings all testified to the existence of the one true God. But many have rejected this testimony and thereby fallen into error.
The term used is replacement theology. In replacement theology the promises that were given to Israel now belong to the Church. The position is that the Church has taken the place of Israel. There are those that say as in the above passage of scripture is the beginning of the Church.

What do the faithful do when confronting heresies. To understand how to confront heresies you must understand what heresy is.
The word “heresy” comes from the Greek , hairesis (from haireomai, “choose”), which means either a choice of beliefs or a faction of believers.
If you do not believe in all of the Word or Bible then you are a heretic.
2 Timothy 3:16 All scripture is given by inspiration of God, and is profitable for doctrine, for reproof, for correction, for instruction in righteousness:
For example the Jehovah Witnesses do not believe in eternal suffering in hell (Gehenna).
Luke 16:23-25 And in hell he lift up his eyes, being in torments, and seeth Abraham afar off, and Lazarus in his bosom.
And he cried and said, Father Abraham, have mercy on me, and send Lazarus, that he may dip the tip of his finger in water, and cool my tongue; for I am tormented in this flame.
But Abraham said, Son, remember that thou in thy lifetime receivedst thy good things, and likewise Lazarus evil things: but now he is comforted, and thou art tormented.
The rich man was in fire and not consumed. Asking for water for he was thirsty. This does not speak of annihilation, or the total destruction of a person, but it speaks of torment. This is a statement given by our Lord Christ Jesus. He did not speak idly or in jest. Everything He said is based on truth.
Matthew 12:36 But I say unto you, That every idle word that men shall speak, they shall give account thereof in the day of judgment.
Again the Jehovah’s Witnesses believe that Christ Jesus our Lord is an inferior God and that He is the archangel Michael. Consider once again what the Word says about Christ Jesus our Lord being distinct from angels.
Hebrews 1:5 For unto which of the angels said he at any time, Thou art my Son, this day have I begotten thee? And again, I will be to him a Father, and he shall be to me a Son?
John 3:16 states that Christ Jesus is the only begotten of the Father. There is not another one like Him. There are a multitude of angels.
Some will say that heresy is heresy to someone of an opposing view. In other words Catholics may call Protestants heretics and Protestants may likewise call Catholics heretics.
I would call all of them heretics if either rely upon the teachings of their denominations and not the Word of God. Many believe because of the size of the congregation or number of years of establishment that this excuses them from keeping the whole Word of God.
Mormons believe that the Heavenly Father is flesh and bone. Discounting what Christ Jesus our Lord told the woman at the well.
John 4:24 God is a Spirit: and they that worship him must worship him in spirit and in truth.
They also believe that the angel Moroni gave another gospel to Joseph Smith, the founder of Mormonism.
Galatians 1:8 But though we, or an angel from heaven, preach any other gospel unto you than that which we have preached unto you, let him be accursed.
The Catholics believe that Mary intercedes for us. Christ Jesus does not need help interceding for us. He is the only way to the Heavenly Father.
Romans 8:34 Who is he that condemneth? It is Christ that died, yea rather, that is risen again, who is even at the right hand of God, who also maketh intercession for us.
Some Catholics would even venture to call Mary the Queen of Heaven, thereby showing they are heretics. The Queen of Heaven is a pagan god.
Jeremiah 7:18 The children gather wood, and the fathers kindle the fire, and the women knead their dough, to make cakes to the queen of heaven, and to pour out drink offerings unto other gods, that they may provoke me to anger.
Jeremiah 44:25 Thus saith the LORD of hosts, the God of Israel, saying; Ye and your wives have both spoken with your mouths, and fulfilled with your hand, saying, We will surely perform our vows that we have vowed, to burn incense to the queen of heaven, and to pour out drink offerings unto her: ye will surely accomplish your vows, and surely perform your vows
26 Therefore hear ye the word of the LORD, all Judah that dwell in the land of Egypt; Behold, I have sworn by my great name, saith the LORD, that my name shall no more be named in the mouth of any man of Judah in all the land of Egypt, saying, The Lord GOD liveth.
27 Behold, I will watch over them for evil, and not for good: and all the men of Judah that are in the land of Egypt shall be consumed by the sword and by the famine, until there be an end of them
The Southern Baptist do not believe in women assuming leadership roles over men. They disregard the instruction of the Apostle Paul when referring to the women that labored in the Gospel.
Romans 16:1 I commend unto you Phebe our sister, which is a servant of the church which is at Cenchrea:
1 Corinthians 3:5 Who then is Paul, and who is Apollos, but ministers by whom ye believed, even as the Lord gave to every man?
Notice the Strong’s Concordance number, (1249 is used for minister and servant) is used for both Paul and Phebe. This indicates that the same word in the orginal Greek is used for both Paul and Phebe. Also consider Deborah, a Judge of Israel and Priscilla who helped to correct Apollos a mighty man in the scriptures.
Judges 4:4 And Deborah, a prophetess, the wife of Lapidoth, she judged Israel at that time
Acts 18:26 And he began to speak boldly in the synagogue: whom when Aquila and Priscilla had heard, they took him unto them, and expounded unto him the way of God more perfectly.
There are some apostolics that believe in modalism or that there are not three in one as it says in I John 5 neither do they understand the simple word both.
1 John 5:7 For there are three that bear record in heaven, the Father, the Word, and the Holy Ghost: and these three are one.
John 15:24 If I had not done among them the works which none other man did, they had not had sin: but now have they both seen and hated both me and my Father.
Christ Jesus is the literal spoken Word of God and therefore inseparable from God. A person cannot separate himself from what he has spoken as God does not separate Himself from what He has spoken.
John 10:30 I and my Father are one.
People have been sidetracked by traditions, lies, errors and deceptions. We the Children of God must submit to the entire Word of God that we do not become heretics.
Is there ever a time in our Christian faith when we can reach a place or be excused for keeping or upholding the righteousness of God’s word? Can a person who has fought the good fight of faith for 60 years and more get so tired that he/she compromises the Word of God they have defended all those years and it be imputed for righteousness?
Romans 1:32 states that … Who knowing the judgment of God, that they which commit such things are worthy of death, not only do the same, but have pleasure in them that do them.
Do they not realize that they are having pleasure in them that commit such things when they no longer defend the faith but compromise the faith?
There is much discussion on the faith of the presidential candidates this year. President George Bush narrow presidential wins the pundits believe were based on evangelicals turning out to vote. The two wins also help to set the tenor for this year’s presidential election. Every candidate has acknowledged a belief in something.
When you consider the variety of candidates this year, white, black, Muslim name, family of Mormons, then you understand how complex the election becomes when everyone says they believe in God. Logically we know that they all can not believe in the same God.
The question that needs to be answered is, does a person’s faith either qualify or disqualify him from the office of President. Many would say that the country’s founding fathers were Christian and therefore we should have Christian leaders leading a Christian nation. However history tells a different story. Thomas Jefferson was a deist and George Washington that believed “every person should worship to the dictate of their own conscience”. Ten of the first 18 presidents were slave owners. Those who owned slaves: George Washington; Thomas Jefferson; James Madison; James Monroe; Andrew Jackson; John Tyler; James K. Polk; Zachary Taylor; Andrew Johnson and Ulysses S. Grant. Those that didn’t: John Adams; John Quincy Adams; Martin Van Buren; William Harrison; Millard Fillmore; Franklin Pierce; James Buchanan; and Abraham Lincoln.
Dwight Eisenhower was raised a Jehovah’s Witness and continued as one until his run for public office. On February 10, 1864 ministers gathered together to ask President Lincoln and Congress to passage of an amended Preamble declaring the United States a Christian nation. Both the President and Congress did not follow through on such overtures. There were four Unitarian Presidents; John Adams, John Quincy Adams, Millard Fillmore and William Taft. Unitarianism is just as cultic as Mormonism. Their belief is Adhering to strict monotheism, they maintain that Jesus was a great man and a prophet of God, perhaps even a supernatural being, but not God himself. Unitarians believe in the moral authority, but not necessarily the divinity, of Jesus. They do not pray to Jesus.
Therefore, we have had Presidents that were not Christians. We deceive ourselves to believe that we actually elect Presidents, discounting what Daniel 4:17 says;
This matter is by the decree of the watchers, and the demand by the word of the holy ones: to the intent that the living may know that the most High ruleth in the kingdom of men, and giveth it to whomsoever he will, and setteth up over it the basest of men.
The problem with this is how is a cult identified. It is identified by the ruling/controlling political party. Consider the following verse.
Acts 24:5 For we have found this man a pestilent fellow, and a mover of sedition among all the Jews throughout the world, and a ringleader of the sect of the Nazarenes:
The word sect used above refers to the believers in Christ Jesus. The word sect used in this verse can also be used as heresy. Therefore the rulers of the Jews determined that Christians were heretics. This is one reason Catholicism is acceptable. President Kennedy’s tenure in office allowed the religion to go mainstream. If Mitt Romney were elected President, you can believe that Mormonism would possibly also become mainstreamed as Catholicism is.
President Bush taught that a person will say anything to get elected Presidented. Doug Wead, a minister that tried to teach George Bush about the Christian faith expressed his disappointment at the President’s lack of interest in theology and the Bible. According to Wead, he used the evangelicals to be elected President.
This what the believers in Christ Jesus must be aware of. Do not judge a person by his words. Judge him by his fruit or actions.
Luke 6:43,44 For a good tree bringeth not forth corrupt fruit; neither doth a corrupt tree bring forth good fruit.
For every tree is known by his own fruit. For of thorns men do not gather figs, nor of a bramble bush gather they grapes
We as believers in Christ Jesus have a leader and ruler. It is interesting to see what the outcome is this year. Will it be a black, a woman, a Muslim, an atheist or even a Morman.
I think it is quite interesting that it has been forty years since Martin Luther King was assassinated after giving his Mountaintop speech. He made allusions to Moses going up on the Mountaintop but not entering the Promised Land. Israel too wandered in the wilderness for forty years. Will this election be culmination of forty years of wandering in the political process.
